Mopar Remanufactured CVTs

Motor Age -- Mopar® has announced the launch of a new line of remanufactured continuously variable transmissions (CVTs), the most recent addition in a long line of authentically remanufactured powertrain products introduced by Chrysler Group LLC's service, parts and customer-care brand. With the launch, Mopar now offers the only remanufactured Chrysler CVT assemblies available for purchase by Independent Repair Facilities (IRFs).

This new line of CVTs is remanufactured with the highest change-level parts available and is quality-tested to O.E. standards with O.E. procedures and equipment. In addition, Mopar Reman CVTs are backed by a fully transferable Mopar 3-Year/100,000-Mile Powertrain Warranty.

Mopar Remanufactured CVT features:

  • Each unit is completely disassembled and inspected
  • Numerous critical components, including bearings, gaskets, filters and other elements, are replaced 100 percent
  • Each unit is carefully reassembled in the same facility in which it was originally manufactured
  • All units must pass the same final quality-testing as a brand new CVT unit

Mopar Remanufactured CVTs are the latest addition to the brand's lineup of more than 4,000 remanufactured parts – over 500 new products were added in 2012.

"With the introduction of Mopar Remanufactured CVTs, Mopar continues to increase the number of high-quality, durable products available to customers looking to purchase reman parts," said Kathy Wideman, Senior Manager, Mopar Repair/Reman Portfolio. "Our reman CVTs are a Mopar exclusive and are another example of our brand's dedication to innovation in our ever-growing portfolio of reman parts."

Contact your local Chrysler Group LLC dealer for more information regarding Mopar Remanufactured CVTs.

Electronics Diverge In Engineering Ford's Hybrid C-Max and Plug-In Energi

SAE.org -- Turning a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) into a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) is more than adding cells to a battery pack, reflashing the controller, and installing a charger. The 2013 Ford C-Max and C-Max Energi are examples of what it takes to develop conventional hybrid and plug-in versions of the same vehicle--that is, many specific parts, software, and validation.

Both cars have lithium-ion (nickel-manganese-cobalt oxide) cells, which are chemically very similar. But those in the plug-in C-Max Energi, which has a 21-mi (34-km) EV range, have thicker electrodes and store more energy.

Why wouldn't the C-Max conventional HEV have the same electrode thickness? Because thinner electrodes have less impedance, so the cells (of which there also are fewer) can deliver electric power faster. HEV batteries are a power source for acceleration assist, only minimal EV operation.

Designing for dual function

PHEV batteries, however, primarily are an energy source and, for EV operation, must be able to discharge deeply and take repeated recharge cycles over many years. But once EV energy is depleted, plug-in cells also must function in HEV mode. So electrodes' design and other aspects of energy cells are a balancing act.
