Mitchell Repair Information Company, a leading provider of information to the automotive repair industry, presented the 1997 Technician Of The Future award to Mr. Raymond Mason. The award was presented at the Annual Board Meeting of the National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) in Redondo Beach, California on November 20, 1997. Mr. Mason earned this honor by achieving the highest composite score of any individual registered as a student. These scores were compiled from the Electrical, and Engine Performance and Advanced Engine Performance ASE tests in November 1996 and May 1997. Mr. Mason lives in Chula Vista, California and is currently a student at Southwestern College. The award was presented by Mitchell's Marketing Director, David Koontz. Mr. David Ellingen has been named to succeed Mr. Ron Monark as President of Mitchell Repair Information Company (MRIC) effective November 1, 1997. Prior to his appointment at MRIC, Ellingen spent 17 years at Snap-on Incorporated where he held a variety of management positions. In 1980 he was a field trainer in the equipment line. He traveled throughout the United States for three years visiting every state, giving him an excellent understanding of how the Snap-On sales system works. In 1984 Mr. Ellingen was a Product Manager - Test Equipment for inside manufactured products. He introduced key products to the marketplace (Counselor series, AVR's, assorted handheld) and was an integral part in expanding Snap-on's market share in the equipment business. Mr. Ellingen was given the responsibility for both inside and outside manufactured lines in 1985. In this capacity he increased annual sales tenfold prior to the Sun acquisition in 1992. From 1988 to 1995 he was also in charge of all Snap-On Equipment product lines on a worldwide basis. In 1995 Mr. Ellingen was involved in the creation of Snap-On Diagnostics Centers of Excellence. This involved taking eleven different engineering operations, eliminating duplication of effort and setting up a team to service all seven business units with the combined engineering group. Mr. Ellingen also took over the responsibility for worldwide management of Engineering and Product Management of Snap-On Diagnostics. Mr. Ellingen's involvement with the automotive industry began during his college years. He ran a service station his first three years of college and was the Service Manager of a marina his last year of college. Mr. Ellingen graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a major in Marketing and a minor in Finance. He is married and has a ten year old daughter. Seeking out excellent performance within the educational community, Mitchell Repair Information Company presented their annual Educator of the Year award at the North American Council of Automotive Teachers (NACAT) annual conference. This year's Educator of the Year Award was presented to Russell Angel. Mr. Angel was recognized for his excellent performance on the ASE Test, receiving the highest total score among all the educators participating in the A1-A8 and L-1 tests. Mr. Angel has held ASE master technician status for the last 21 years and also holds Advanced Engine Performance (L1) certification. He has been an automotive technology instructor at Canton South High School for 13 years, bringing eight years of previous repair experience to the school's automotive repair program. While teaching at Canton, Mr. Angel has been involved in a new automotive technology program that has significantly increased student placement opportunities after graduation. This three-year pilot program includes a "School to Work" transition program which provides a U.S. department of Labor 4-year apprenticeship for qualified students and a combined mechanical/collision repair cross-training program. Mitchell Repair Information Company (MRIC) has significantly expanded its international presence by announcing the recent license agreement signed with China. MRIC has licensed its repair information to the Center For Vehicle Maintenance & Safety Inspection in Bejing. "China will be among the leading economies of the 21st century," stated Ron Monark, President and CEO of Mitchell Repair Information Company. "The automotive industry is a cornerstone of the developing economic plan for China. Last year China manufactured 450,000 vehicles. By the turn of the century the number will be 5 million." Snap-On Incorporated and The Thomson Corporation today announced that Snap-On has acquired a 50% interest in Thomson's Mitchell Repair Information Division. The jointly-owned company will operate as a new entity under the name, Mitchell Repair Information Company. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed. Mitchell Repair is the largest provider of print and electronic vehicle mechanical and electrical system repair information to independent shops, national accounts and original equipment manufacturers throughout North America. "The Thomson Corporation is recognized as a leader and an innovator in the electronic publishing field," said Branko Beronja, Snap-On senior vice president--North American Diagnostics. "We believe they represent an exceptionally strong partner for Snap-On Their expertise has enabled them to grow Mitchell into the most recognized name in the automotive repair information business, and we plan to build on that reputation." The arrangement will enable Snap-On to offer a complete package of integrated information and business services to vehicle repair centers around the world. The new company will maintain and grow the Mitchell brand and distribution channel. Additionally, differentiated private-branded products will be developed for Snap-On's dealer channel, positioning the new company to reach all channels in the automotive service industry. The agreement also provides Snap-On with access to Mitchell's comprehensive vehicle repair data base. "We will now be able to integrate vehicle repair information into every diagnostic platform we produce," said Beronja. "Information is a critical part of automobile service today.
